Hey Fran! I haven't read your blog in ages, but this was a great post. I use you as an example at least once a week when talking to people for whom school isn't right and who are trying to make it in the world without a degree. You really hacked out a good place for yourself though hard work and cleverness. It's so important not to undervalue yourself. I remember when I was trying to figure out a price to charge for tutoring. I LOVED tutoring, and it was hard to change the rate from what I normally charged for babysitting to an acceptable tutoring rate. If you charge too little, people don't take you seriously! An excellent post from an excellent friend!

Quaker or Monks Parrots which roost in Brooklyn and the Bronx. They were allegedly escapees from a shipment at Kennedy Airport which have become a feral flock. We think of them as tropical, but it seems the hot weather bothers them more than the cold.

Hm. Just watched the movie for the first time, and a number of lines kept making me think of this one White Stripes song. I decided to do some research, and this was the first site I found. So, thanks.

Well, for starters, Southland Tales was made in 2006, so if you want to look for a matching cartogram, you'd have to go back to the 2004 election. Though, it is eerily similar to the 2008 cartogram you pointed out. One major difference between the cartograms is the handling of bodies of water. The Newman cartograms seem to preserve the size of bodies of water, while the Southland Tales cartograms seem to shrink them down to a rough outline. This difference is most notable in the Great Lakes, Tampa Bay, and the bodies of water surrounding Long Island.

According to his site his maps are licensed by a Creative Commons Attribution license so they would have had to have let him know that they used it. I also think they might have to say something in the poster (or movie credits?). The author of the maps Mark Newman does state on his site that he'd appreciate it if you would let him know if you use them. I guess that would override the license.

Come to think of it, I didn't let him know I used them, but I think I'm covered under fair use. And yea no html allowed in the comments.
